Utica Rome Speedway owner Gene Cole has stepped up big time to reward one of his own drivers at the “RoC at the Rock” Race of Champions Dirt Modified Series event at the Black Rock Speedway on Wednesday, July 11th. Cole will post a $500 bonus to the highest finishing Utica Rome Speedway regular and should that driver win, it will increase to $1,000, giving him a $6,000 pay day.
The Race of Champions Dirt Modified Series will make its first ever appearance at Black Rock as the top Modified drivers in the northeast converge on the Yates County oval for the 60 lap feature event. The Race of Champions Street Stock Series will also be on the card that night along with a Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinder event which will guarantee the winner a top ten starting position in the $10,000 to win Big One event at the end of the season.
The “RoC at the Rock” will be promoted by Dan Harpell of DLH Promotions. Harpell, who is the Race Director at both the Penn Can and Five Mile Point Speedway’s, also takes care of the track prep duties at Utica Rome on Sunday nights.
“Gene Cole has posted a generous reward in support of his regular competitors at Utica Rome that compete in the “RoC at the Rock”, said Harpell. “With drivers like Stewart Friesen, Pat Ward, Alan Johnson, Ryan Phelps, Todd Burley, Ronnie Johnson, Mike Mahaney and Larry Wight, to name a few, all calling Utica Rome home, there is a good chance that one of them will walk off with the $1,000 bonus for winning the race. I have to thank Gene for adding to the excitement of the “RoC at the Rock” at Black Rock”. Ward is a three time RoC Series Champion and Friesen is also a past champion of the RoC Dirt Modified Series.
“I am happy to get behind this event and reward our regular drivers for supporting Dan’s race”, said Cole. “It will be a great show and if one of our drivers wins, I will gladly pay out the $1,000. Either way one of our guys will take home at least an extra $500”, he added.
Of course the Utica Rome regulars will face some stiff competition in the form of drivers like Billy Decker, Matt Sheppard, Danny Johnson, Jimmy Phelps, Billy VanPelt, Brian Weaver and many, many more. This will be a blockbuster show featuring a who’s who in Modified racing.
The winner of the 60 lap “RoC at the Rock” will take home a minimum of $5,000 as well as a guaranteed starting spot in the Outlaw 200 at the Fulton Speedway. Qualifying for that event will not be easy so going in with a guaranteed starting spot takes a lot of the pressure off.
Racing legend Dutch Hoag will be recognized at the “RoC at the Rock”. Hoag is the only driver to win the actual Race of Champions on both dirt and asphalt. He is a five time winner of the event. In conjunction with the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Series making its first appearance at Black Rock, which is owned by Dutch’s son Dean, Dutch will be recognized for his history making accomplishments in the early years of the Race of Champions.
Make your plans now to attend the “RoC at the Rock” on Wednesday, July 11th at Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, New York, just eight miles from historic Watkins Glen.
