DUNDEE, NY…The latest news coming out of the new Yates County Speedway in Dundee, New York is that veteran announcer Mel Thomas will join Tyler Harpell in the booth as announcers for the 2014 racing season at the former Black Rock Speedway. Thomas Video will also be handling the videography at the track. Thomas was the voice of the Dundee oval from 1982 through 1990. Thomas returns to the booth after a 24 year absence. He worked with new Track Promoter Dan Harpell, who was Race Director in 1987 and 88 at Dundee, and the two have had a friendship that spans more than 30 years. “I’m excited to be back in the booth at the new Yates County Speedway”, said Thomas. “There is a lot of excitement surrounding the upcoming season and Dan has things going in the right direction. I look forward to being a part of the action”, he added. Thomas has announced at a countless number of tracks throughout his 40 plus years in the business. This will be a homecoming of sorts for Thomas as he lives in nearby Geneva.
Thomas will be joined in the booth by 21 year old Tyler Harpell, a Junior at Oswego State. Don’t let his age fool you. Harpell has spent his whole life around racing and has been announcing for a few years now. He will be leaving his position as Head Announcer at Penn Can Speedway to join his father Dan in the operation of the new Yates County Speedway. Harpell is also an announcer at Five Mile Point Speedway. “I look forward to working with Mel. I have known him my whole life and I think we will have a lot of fun calling the races together”, said Tyler Harpell.
Yates County Speedway will open with a practice session on Friday, April 18th and follow up with another one on April 25th. The grand opening of the all new Yates County Speedway will take place on Friday, May 2nd, highlighted by an appearance by the CRSA Sprint Cars.
