BRP Can-Am 360 Late Models Kick Off Their Season at Black Rock Friday

Dundee, NY - One month ago it was cold, really cold; it was so cold that it postponed the Black Rock Speedway Season Opener. Four weeks after a freeze out, the BRP Can-Am 360 Late Models finally have their chance to get race one in the book.
After a disappointing rainout last Friday night in Dundee, the 4/10-mile is set to resume this Friday for it’s second month of racing. 108 cars were in the pit area last week, with only 10 Super Stocks, this week that number should increase exponentially with a significantly better forecast, plus the anticipated high car counts the Can-Am tour will draw in 2007.
T&R Towing and Pepsi will present the third full night of racing for the 2007 season. This is the most likely going to be the highest car count that BRS will see in the young season and should be some of the best weather as well (Readers please knock on wood for me).
The Freedom Village USA Super Stock regulars will be running this week with the Can-Am series, allowing for a host of outsiders to come in and go to battle at Black Rock. When point races resume next week, the Super Stocks will have a new weight rule of 2700 lbs.
Randy Hall is the defending Can-Am 360 Late Model Champion. He busted onto the scene at Black Rock last spring when he scored a second-place finish from the B-Main. Jeremy Wonderling won that event and since then has been the most feared 360 Late Model in Yates County. This year so far, Larry Knowles has been the top driver in Freedom Village USA Super Stock races, giving him the point’s lead. These three drivers comprise the three Can-Am 360 Late Model winners at BRS in 2006.
Along with those three favorites, Jeff Chesebro showed two weeks ago why Black Rock was site of his second and third career wins in 2005. The Farmers Valley, PA driver was second to Knowles on week two and should be a force in his No. 97.
Quinn Sutherland leads a clan of locals that will compete in this event. Winter improvements to the No. 36 put Sutherland’s name up with the favorites for the first of three Can-Am sanctioned races at Black Rock in 2007. Donnie Smith in Jim Schuyler’s No. 57J, Sparky Hills in the No. 45, and Rookie Bob Buono will be some of the other familiar names that will be on hand for this event.
With nearly 20 rookies listed for the 2007 tour, the BRP Can-Am 360 Late Models expect to have an enormous car count on Friday Night, along with another 100 cars in the pit area from the other five divisions.
Steve Paine remains the only 358-modified winner at Black Rock but is not assured of a three-peat. Ron Cartwright Jr., Brian Swarthout, Dave DuBois, Dave DuBois and Tim Sebring remain some of the fearsome bunch that want to diffuse of The Hurricane.
Todd Henderson is fast at Black Rock, that is for sure, but the battle to become the first to top “Handsome Todd” is on. Brady Fultz, Junior Green, Greg Hixson and Kevin Ridley are all set to become the second winner in the Hoselton Crate Sportsman Division.
The Regional-International Trucks Pro Trucks/Street Stocks class is still in its infancy, with its second race still yet to be run. After this week, appropriate changes will be made to set the run towards a singular championship between the two styles of race vehicles. Terry Povoski won the first race and would be no surprise to contend again this week.
The Signs Plus of Kanona 4-Cylinder Mini Stocks had an abundance of beautifully prepared machine ready to race on Friday, but will have to wait until this week to go to battle on the track. This is one of the most exciting classes of the year at BRS because of their high car counts and even playing field.
The Black Rock Bandits were the only class to get their feature in last week. Kreg Crooker took the checkered flag, making it three different winners in the first three weeks. Names like C.J. Winslow, Dylan Cecce and Cody Moorehouse look to make it four for four this week.
Starting next week, RACEceiver 1-way radios will be tested for use at Black Rock to keep racing moving along at an efficient pace.
